Seventy-five years ago, two German states were founded. Ursula Weidenfeld presents a unique history of divided Germany. In West German memory, the Federal Republic (often simply called “Germany”) and the GDR, considered the “second German state,” are prominent. The GDR’s history is usually told retrospectively, as often happens with failed states. In contrast, West Germany’s history is viewed continuously from its founding to today, which overlooks the potential of both systems.

Ursula Weidenfeld takes a different approach: she describes the unique parallel and competitive situation of the two states, attracting and repelling like magnets. This comparison and simultaneous consideration of both countries open a new perspective on German history from 1949 to today. Due to the few shared memories, this is a particular challenge that Weidenfeld embraces, offering a new view of divided Germany.

Our co-working space is located in the former Babelsberg Post Office, a heritage-protected building from 1966 that combines modern design with industrial architecture. The architect of this building was Wolfgang Müller, who was also responsible for the design of the terrace restaurant Minsk on Brauhausberg.
